RSPB Winterbourne Downs
Saturday 13 June 2026
10:00 to 12:00
Saturday 13th June 2026 at RSPB Winterbourne Downs for 10am meet at the RSPB visitor car park - Station Road, Newton Tony, Wiltshire, SP4 0HE.
We will spend a couple of hours being shown around this 730 acre chalk grassland natur reserve by Patrick Casman, who has been the reserves site manager for 18 years. Patrick has been overseeing the establishment of over 500 acres of species-rich chalk grassland, now supporting a rich assemblage of chalk grassland butterflies, and an important population of nesting stone-curlew. Since 2013 the RSPB have been creating topographic diversity at Winterbourne Downs to favour chalk butterflies with the creation of large butterfly banks and scrapes planted with caterpillar foodplants, which has aided the arrival of species such as the Adonis and Chalkhill blue, Marsh fritillary and the Duke of Burgundy butterfly.
